Household gas detector. Winner of the Red Dot Design Concept Award 2022

Year: 2022

Description:

People all over the world are exposed to danger from gas leaks and the deathly explosions they cause. That’s not all, a big number of people fall sick because of the constant exposure to leaking natural gas. It is very important to include a gas alarm systems into our every day life and must be certainly considering by designers when creating modern interior designs. Therefore, my concept is intended to rethink the design of a household gas detector for methane and carbon monoxide with accent on aesthetics, functionality and usability. I tried to design a device that would fit perfectly into modern interiors and at the same time easy to understand and use for people of all ages and categories. First of all, I focused on the appearance of the device that will become a visual representation of the function that it performs. Therefore, the inspiration was the flow of air, which is reflected in a shape. It symbolizes how the air passes through the device. The design includes a test button for checking the device's performance. I also paid due attention to people with disabilities. In addition to the standard light indicators, there is an extra bright lighting for deaf people, that can be projected onto the wall and onto the device itself. Visual indication is visible from all sides, because the device has two location options. It must be located on the wall closer to the floor or vice versa closer to the ceiling, depending on the type of gas to be determined. There is also a loud sound alarm included. Thus, minimalistic design that includes nothing superfluous, but necessary indicators and test button is a great fit for the elderly. The concept also suggests that the device can be connected to the smartphone via Wi-Fi
